CLIFF-GRADS Scholarship 2020 Round Four is open! We are pleased to announce that the fourth round of the CLIFF-GRADS programme is now open! The deadline for applications closes on 01 April 2020. Fifty-four exciting research opportunities in livestock, soil, rice, modelling and agroforestry are available this round. Students from developing countries currently enrolled in PhD programmes in developing countries are invited to apply for short-term scientific research stays. Training topics are related to the measurement, modelling and mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions and/or carbon storage in agricultural systems relevant to developing countries (this may be in the context of enhancing food security).   For any enquiries regarding CLIFF-GRADS and offers of funding support, please contact us via cliffgrads@globalresearchalliance.org New Zealand Global Research Alliance Doctoral Scholarships (NZ-GRADS) is open! The Global Research Alliance on Agricultural Greenhouse Gas Emissions (GRA) is delighted to launch the new NZ-GRADS programme. The deadline for applications closes on 01 June 2020. Students from developing countries are invited to apply to complete their PhDs at a New Zealand University. The scholarships offered will support students undertaking research related to greenhouse gas emissions from agricultural systems. The primary focus will be on livestock emissions, but innovative and novel aspects of other areas will be considered, especially relating to new technologies or new applications of existing technologies.  Global Research Alliance Council Meeting The 9th annual GRA Council meeting took place on 6–7 October 2019 in Bali, Indonesia alongside the first CLIFF-GRADS Alumni Workshop, the Global Science Conference on Climate Smart Agriculture and the annual Paddy Rice Research Group (PRRG) meeting. The Council meeting was hosted and chaired by representatives from the Indonesian Agency for Agricultural Research and Development (IAARD). Discussions focused on the development of GRA Flagship projects, development of decision support tools, ways to increase the integration of science and training across the GRA Research Groups (Croplands, Paddy Rice, Livestock and Integrative). Australia, represented by the Australian Centre for International Agriculture Research (ACIAR), was confirmed as the GRA Council vice-Chair and will work to support Indonesia during its term as chair for the next 12 months. Council members also initiated discussions on the development of the GRA Strategic Plan and associated priority actions for the period 2021–2025. The Council meeting also provided an opportunity to hear from new Members and Partners of the GRA. Members attending the meeting for the first time were Eswatini, Malawi, Mongolia, and new partners, the European Commission and AG-MIP.  The presentations from the meeting are available here. Croplands Research Group Meeting The 11th annual Croplands Research Group (CRG) meeting took place on the 14 November 2019 in San Antonio, Texas, USA. The meeting was hosted and chaired by Mark Liebig, USA, and María Rosa Mosquera Losada, Spain (co-Chairs of the CRG). Discussions focused on past activities of CRG, what outcomes CRG wants to achieve, how the CRG can achieve these outcomes, and how communication both internally and externally is delivered. CRG committed to producing a collaborative manuscript addressing biophysical opportunities, constraints and caveats of greenhouse gas mitigation options. To view the most recent CRG newsletter, click here.  The presentations from the meeting are available here.   Paddy Rice Asia Sub-Group Meeting The  9th annual Paddy Rice Research Group (PRRG) meeting took place on the 12 October 2019 in Bali, Indonesia. The meeting was hosted by Indonesia and chaired by Japan (Dr. Yasukazu Hosen, NARO (NIAES)) as co-Chair of the PRRG. Senegal observed the meeting as co-Chair of PRRG.  Discussions focused on the activities of PRRG, how to facilitate the sharing of information and data across sub-groups, expanding the geographical scope of PRRG, the establishment of new initiatives under the Africa sub-group, and understanding the new flagship requirements as agreed by the GRA council. This included looking at the benefits and costs of the current structure of PRRG. The presentations from the meeting are available here.   Nigeria, Cote D'ivoire, Benin and Zambia join the GRA The GRA is very pleased to announce the newest member countries to have joined the Alliance! Zambia is the latest addition, making it the 62nd member country to have joined to GRA. The GRA is looking forward to working with these countries to improve sustainable farming practices and to produce more food while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. First CLIFF-GRADS Alumni Workshop Thirty-six CLIFF-GRADS alumni from twenty different countries attended a workshop in Indonesia in October 2019 alongside the annual meeting of the GRA Council. The workshop was the first opportunity for CLIFF-GRADS alumni to meet one another, given that they all come from different countries and study in host institutions around the world. It established a network of young professionals, and provided networking opportunities with leading scientists and country representatives in the students’ respective fields. The goals of the workshop were to build the capability of CLIFF-GRADS alumni, establish a network of young professionals, and provide networking opportunities with leading scientists and country representatives in the students’ respective fields. The workshop provided a platform for the alumni to present their research, as well as to discuss and refine their research project methodologies. The workshop was held alongside the Global Science Conference on Climate-Smart Agriculture, which provided the CLIFF-GRADS alumni a second forum from which to learn and network. Global Research Alliance Partner FONTAGRO Call for Proposals are open! The GRA partner organisation FONTAGRO (Fondo Regional de Tecnología Agropecuaria / Regional Fund for Agricultural Technology) is pleased to announce Convocatoria 2020 - Call for proposals. FONTAGRO is a unique mechanism of regional cooperation that promotes family farming innovation, competitiveness and food security.  The objective of the call is to identify the best project proposals that demonstrate concrete evidence of how to bring about sustainable increases in productivity in the agricultural sector of Latin America and the Caribbean in the context of climate change.  Eight projects funded in Joint Call on "Novel technologies, solutions and systems to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions in animal production systems" In October 2018, a Joint Call of the ERA-NETs FACCE ERA-GAS, SusAn and ICT-AGRI on "Novel technologies, solutions and systems to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions in animal production systems" was launched. Eight projects were selected for funding with the participation of nineteen GRA member countries.
